Tragedy Strikes Northwestern Turkey

A flash flood struck a campsite in northwestern Turkey, near the Bulgarian border, claiming the lives of at least five individuals, with three more fatalities reported on Wednesday. The relentless deluge also swept away bungalow homes in its path. Rescue teams are intensively searching for one person who remains missing at the campsite.

Turkish Metropolis Suffers Losses

In Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, Tuesday's storms resulted in two casualties as they inundated numerous homes and workplaces in multiple neighborhoods. Among the victims was a 32-year-old Guinean citizen trapped in his basement apartment in the low-income Kucukcekmece district, as reported by Turkish broadcaster HaberTurk TV. Another casualty was a 57-year-old woman who tragically perished after being swept away by the floodwaters in a different neighborhood, according to the private DHA news agency.

The surging floodwaters have left over 1,750 homes and businesses in the city affected, according to the Istanbul governor's office. In the Ikitelli district, a line of shops bore the brunt of the deluge, with parked vehicles and mud inundating furniture stores, causing extensive damage, as reported by DHA.

The floods also inundated a parking area for containers and trucks on the outskirts of the city, forcing individuals to seek refuge on the roof of a nearby restaurant, as Turkish media outlets have detailed.

Greece Grapples with Record Rainfall

Greece faced record-breaking rainfall, resulting in at least two deaths near the central city of Volos, with three individuals reported missing. The fire department reported that one man lost his life on Tuesday when a wall collapsed on him, while the body of a woman was discovered on Wednesday.

In response to the dire situation, authorities imposed a traffic ban in Volos, the nearby mountain region of Pilion, and the resort island of Skiathos, where many households remained without electricity on Wednesday. Traffic restrictions were also enforced in two additional regions of central Greece near Volos, with the storms forecasted to persist until at least Thursday afternoon.

Bulgaria's Southern Black Sea Coast Hit

Bulgaria faced a storm that resulted in widespread flooding along its southern Black Sea coast. The body of a missing tourist was recovered from the sea on Wednesday, raising the death toll in the country to three. Border police vessels and drones were deployed to assist in locating two individuals still listed as missing.

Television footage depicted cars and camper vans being swept out to sea in the southern resort town of Tsarevo, where authorities declared a state of emergency. The majority of rivers in the region overflowed, and several bridges were destroyed, leading to severe traffic disruptions.

Tourism Minister Zaritsa Dinkova disclosed that approximately 4,000 people were affected by the disaster along the entire southern stretch of Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. She noted, "There is a problem transporting tourists because it is dangerous to go by coach on the roads affected by the floods.
